Today I’m sharing a fun set of free rainbow coloring pages with you! I illustrated these a few years back for my twins’ seventh birthday party. That was the last year they agreed to have a joint birthday party and being boy/girl twins, honestly I’m impressed they lasted that long 😉
The theme they agreed on that year was ‘rainbow’ and it was an easy going outdoor party with treats and lots of trampoline time with their friends. Their ideas are much more involved now! You can see a sneak peek of this party right here, or in my blog post on my sister-blog all about affordable kids party ideas.
One of the things I do for all of the younger kids’ parties is create a set of free coloring pages that coordinate with their party theme. Since I don’t do anything half-way, I like to illustrate them to make sure they have a unique coloring page to remember their party by. I also do this at our holiday parties where we’re inviting families with young kids.
I know that coloring sheets aren’t technically a birthday party activity but hear me out. If your kids are inviting children that don’t all know eachother- or if it’s a new group to your home, a coloring sheet or coloring station is a really safe and calming activity for little kids to sit down and take part in. Honestly, nervous kids of all ages sit down at the coloring station and get busy creating their coloring page and get talking with whoever else is sitting there.
It’s a really great idea to make everyone feel comfortable and welcome and it’s super easy to setup as well. Just gather some basic coloring supplies like your kids favorite crayons in different colors and print off a stack.
I always print off way more than we might need which gives us leftovers to for our kids color cupboard in our own home after the fact. I like that having more than enough will let kids who feel like they ‘messed up’ start again with a new color without worry and it prevents any arguments about not enough mermaids. It also let’s some of those busy kids take some sheets home if they were too busy partying to color.
I had a lot of fun creating these rainbow characters for this cute rainbow coloring sheet design. I asked my kids which characters they’d like to see and got busy illustrating these cute rainbows with faces. My daughter requested a mermaid and just any kind of beautiful rainbow girl and one son requested a pirate and another a dragon. I rounded out the collection with a simple design that has a picture of a rainbow with a cute face.
These printable coloring sheets are of course, awesome for our busy home full of kids on a rainy day, but this is also a great activity for independent work time for teachers classroom use.
You could ask young minds to color in the pictures with the order of the colors of the rainbow (hey, Roy G. Biv!), as a fun way to practice color recognition or even just as a fun activity around St. Patrick’s Day to help little ones work on their fine motor skills with all the small details. If you’ve used up all the standard rainbow pictures, these characters might be some fun new rainbow coloring pages for your kids to try.

What’s the best way to print free printable coloring sheets
You can print free printable coloring sheets any way you like, but I have a couple suggestions to make the most of them! While every free printable is different, these ones are simple 8.5×11″ PDF documents with only black lines for the rainbow templates which makes them incredibly easy to print at home or at your local print shop. They will print just like a document, without special settings like a photo.
While you can print these on regular paper (this printable is actually very well suited for that!), if you’re planning to give kids watercolor or acrylic paints, I find printing on cardstock is a good idea as it wont wrinkle with the extra moisture. This also lets you color with more pigmented markers without bleeding through to the surface below.
If you do download and use these… you know I would love to see them in action! Tag me @handletteredprintables on social media or shoot me an email [email protected]!
I hope you have so much fun using these free printable rainbow coloring pages. If there’s any other fun coloring sheets you’re looking for – let me know! I’m always adding to my list of future blog post ideas!
